Anti-Inflammatory Matcha Latte

I love coffee.

Like LOOOOOVE coffee.

But sometimes, I really do need a break. As much as I enjoy starting my day with a hot cup of joe, I also have a soft spot for frothy lattes - especially the green ones!

Did you know that one serving of matcha is the nutritional equivalent of 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea...I didn't either, I had to Google it.

I love matcha for a variety of reasons, but especially because it is packed with antioxidants and can help aid in preventing disease. Why does that matter? If you've read 'My Fitness Journey: Part I', you may have picked up on the fact that I was hit with a really bad viral illness about a year and 1/2 ago, it weakend my immune system terribly and caused a chain reaction of inflammation and chronic illness. To help heal my body and keep it running in tip top shape, I am always looking towards antioxidants to help boost immunity. Antioxidants are the body’s defense agents. They are chemical compounds that prevent aging and chronic diseases. The bottom line: the more you have, the better equipped your body is in the fight against infections and disease.

Matcha is also rich in fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins. Better yet, it may help boost your metabolism and burn calories, so that's a plus too!

So throughout the late winter and early spring, I started subbing my morning java with a cup of matcha. Just the simple act of sipping this creamy latte helped me to start my day calm, cool and collected. I really should be making an iced variation right now during the summer months...but that's to come!

So what's in my cup?

Calming Antioxidant Rich Matcha Latte:

  • 1 cup boiled water

  • 1 tbsp organic matcha powder {I used this one here, but you can find great varities at Whole Foods}

  • 1/4 - 1/2 tbsp Fourth & Heart Madagascar Vanilla Bean Ghee {trust me on this one, start small if you've never added ghee or grassfed butter to your coffee, you will love it though!}

  • Hefty shake of ground cinnamon

  • Hefty shake of ground turmeric

  • Splash of your favorite coconut or almond creamer {Trader Joe's Coconut Creamer has been my jam recently!}

If you'd like a touch more sweetness, you can always add a tiny bit of honey too. For me the vanilla in the ghee is perfect though.

Simply add all ingredients to a blender and blend until creamy and frothy. Pour into your favorite mug and top with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

One of my favorite simple pleasures, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
